What's going on with Troop 740?
2006 Boy Scout Camporee
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer"
|
| |
It should
have read “The Adventures of Troop 740”. This was our first
Camporee with the Troop in two years. (Now I know the reason it
was two years apart).
It always
seems to be an adventure every time we go on one of these
Camporees. This one was one for the story books. The night we
arrived they did not have our registration; seems they misplaced
it. This is after I contact the person running the program and
told him we were coming and how many Scouts and Adults were going
to be there. I should have known that this was a sign of things
to come! They found us a site with about 50 other Scouts and
Scouters, so away we went. ‘Uncle’ Cliff drove his van to the
site. We unloaded and we set up camp and the dinning flies.

"We will whether the weather,
no matter the weather, whether we like
it or not".

When
the boys went to bed that night it was very humid. When the
Adults placed their heads on the ground at about 2:30 am it was
getting very foggy. During the night, what was left of it, it
began to rain, slowly at first, and then it rained harder and
harder. When we stared cooking breakfast it was wet. We even
placed a pot in the rain to collect water for KP water (that is
another story, lets just say we did get our iron for the
weekend). Everything was starting to get wet: Tents, Sleeping
Bags, Scouts and the ground. We sent the boys out to do the
program in the pouring rain. They were dressed in Ponchos,
raincoats and some cases Garbage bags. It did not make a
difference what you wore. YOU GOT WET!!...all the way down to
your bones.
While the boys were out singing in the rain, two of our leaders
went over the fence to Wal-Mart to pickup extra tarps for the
sides of the dinning flies. This really worked well to keep the
wind off of the boys when they came back for lunch. Lunch was
over about 1:00 pm and I was told via latrine mail that there was
a leaders meeting at about 1:30 – 2:00 down in the leaders area,
so away Mr. Don and I went. When we got there they said to “pack
up and go home, we are calling it a weekend”. Some of the Troops
had to stay because they had come up by buses and would not be
picked up until Sunday Afternoon. They were put up in cabins - a
very tight fit.
Mr. Don
and I walked back to the site and called Mr. Cliff to come get
us. Now what I neglected to tell you is that he came by for a
visit in the morning before lunch to say ‘hi’. So here he comes
back to the site to grab the gear. We pack up the gear into
Cliff’s van and off we go back to IHM. When we get to the IHM
Shed I remembered that I did not sign the troop out or pick up the
patches. So I asked Cliff to go back to Broadcreek and sign out
the troop. Then from there Cliff went home. Come to find out
sometime during this whole weekend Mr. Cliff hurt his foot and did
not know it. I hope he is going to be ok. He is trying to heal
it as we speak. So what I would like to know is what the boys got
out of this rainy, cold, and windy camping trip?
|
| |
 |
Just ask your sons; they will probably tell you
that it was a great trip! We got to walk in the
rain, have a great meal and things like that.
These are the stories they will pass down to the
younger scouts when they get older. “I
remember one Camporee that I was on”. So
don't always count out a rainy damp and cold
trip as a bad one.
Just remember "We will whether the weather,
no matter the weather, whether we like it or
not".
