What's going on with Troop 740?
Warm weather camping is
around the corner.
'Being Prepared' is more then just a
motto. |
| |
Warm weather, daylight savings time &
Opening Day...sounds like Spring, and before we know it, Summer!
Troop 740 wants you to be prepared for warm weather camping and
most importantly Summer Camp.
Search for "warm weather camping" and
you probably won't find that much information. Cold weather
camping tips dominate the camping handbooks and guides, leaving
little advice for curious parents and scouts. There are a
few simple tips to remember when packing for a warm weather trip;
1. Stay Informed
2. Stay Cool
3. Stay Hydrated
4. Stay Dry
|
 |
| |
Stay Informed by checking the weather
and the climate conditions for where the trip is scheduled.
An unanticipated cold front can move in and put a freeze on the
daytime program, make sure to know what to expect.
Stay cool by packing light....no need
to bring all those thermals and extra hand warmers when packing
for warmer weather. Light clothing is great for most
activities, but long pants are best for hiking, and having at
least one cold weather-rated jacket is a smart idea. Stay
cool and keep cool by drinking lots of water, wearing a hat and
applying sun screen.
"Hydrate or Die". Camelbak's
slogan makes sense, without
water we'd be done. During physical activities, such as
hiking, we can lose a significant amount of water from our bodies.
It is critical to stay hydrated throughout the day. Pack a
water bottle or canteen and use it! Once you start getting
thirsty, dehydration has started to move in. It is
recommended that you take short sips of water every 15 to 20
minutes to keep hydrated all day.
Ask any Camper or Boy Scout;
staying dry can be a hard thing to do when the odds are against
you. The idea is to be ready for the "odds". ALWAYS
pack a rain coat or heavy duty poncho. It is also important
to waterproof your boots, tent and pack with a simple silicon
spray. Weatherproofing & waterproofing your gear can be the
difference between a great camping trip and the flu. |
